Single Mother’s and Weightloss

When our children are young, it can be difficult to stay in shape. As single mother’s, we so not have the option of letting dad take care of the children while we take care of ourselves.

Here are some ideas for losing weight or keeping weight off:

  • Family walks are an excellent way to get in a lot of the needed 10,000 steps a day. Walk to the playground. Walk to run errands. Take a walk around the neighborhood before bath time in the evenings.
  • Play Frisbee or basketball at the park.
  • Put on some music and dance around the living room with your children.
  • Find ways in which you can do easy exercises with your children.
  • Invest in family exercise programs on DVD, or see what is available at your local library.
  • Go on hikes.
  • Run through the puddles on a rainy day.
  • Play on the playground equipment with your children.
  • Run through the sprinkler with your children.
  • Go sledding as a family.

Keeping active is an important aspect of having a healthy body, for both you and your child.

Great Ways to Deal with Stress

I know that a lot of people have been feeling very stressed lately. I am no exception. I have been entirely too stressed out for just over a month now, and things do not seem to be getting better now that the holidays are over.

I would simply like to offer up some ideas for how we can all destress this winter.

  • Take a long walk. Pay attention to nature, and work whatever is bothering you out in your head.

  • Take a long bath. Do not think of anything stressful.

  • Read. I have been doing this one a lot. Reading helps me to block out all random thoughts.

  • Watch mindless television. No, really, I am watching the Love Comes Softly series, as well as other movies when I can. It does help to relax.

  • Exercise.

  • Write. I like this one. Sometimes if I write things out, they become clearer. Sometimes, I have to write stories to forget about annoying issues.

  • Go out for coffee with a friend and talk things out. I wonder how many people that my best friend and I have traumatized at McDonald’s this year due to these outings.

Family Bowling

When my daughters, Skye and Zowie, were younger, we used to go bowling. I do not bowl because of a back injury, so I always kept score. They loved playing against each other, and a little friendly competition never hurt anyone.

We would spend time together before and after bowling by walking there and back. They would bowl, and even created their own victory dances. We all had a great time.

Before heading home, we would go to the pizza place for lunch or dinner. This allowed us even more time to connect. Many things were discussed during these times together, and I will cherish the memories together.

Even when they were younger teenagers, they loved this tradition. We would go at the change of every season so that we could all be looking forward to it. As they got older, we began inviting one or more of their friends along with us, which allowed me to catch up with them as well.

P.S. What is a family tradition that you and your child(ren) have? Discuss this with us in the comments section. Thank you.
