I think that the two main reasons why single parenting is a challenge are:
- They do/may not have the other parent available to discuss important issues, or for moral support.
- They do/may not have the other parent there to help with discipline and handling the tough aspects of parenting.
Now, I am aware that there are many non-couple out there who are co-parenting very well. This is a great thing, but is not always the case.
Many things come up while raising children that would be easier to handle if the other parent were there. They could form a united front, and deal with issues as they occurred. This cannot happen if one parent is not there, and it can be difficult for the parent who is.
It is important for single parents to set up a support system which will be helpful when issues arise. Maybe with family and friends. Or maybe there is a local support group that will be of help.
Just today, I was there for a mom who follows me on Twitter @ BangorSingleMom. Her son was having issues, and I was able to be there for her, even though I had never met her.
BTW: You do not have to live in Bangor to follow me on Twitter.
What support system do you have in place?
