A Food Drawer/Cupboard for a Young Child

Young children like to feel independent. They like to be able to pick what they want to eat, and to be able to fix these things for themselves. This drawer will help them to do all of these things.

When my daughters were young and we lived in the apartment, the lower cupboards had drawers that pulled out instead of stationary shelves. These were very convenient, but not everyone has them. You can use a deep drawer, shelf, or small cupboard instead.

  • Step 1: Choose the location, and allow your child to wash it out well.
  • Step 2: Explain to your child that this drawer will be used as a snack drawer, or a snack and breakfast drawer.
  • Step 3: Let your child decide what will go into the drawer. What foods? Will they need bowls? Spoons? Cups?
  • Step 4: Will they also need a small space in the refrigerator? They may need space in their for yogurt, milk, etc.
  • Step 5: Go shopping with your child.
  • Step 6: Let your child put his/her groceries away.
  • Step 7: Discuss with your child the rules of the food drawer. For instance, “You can only get into the food drawer when Mommy tells you to.” This way, there will not be unnecessary snacking going on.

Okay, now your child is set up to get there own snacks, and possibly breakfast. This will be great for them.

  • At breakfast, your daughter can pour her own cereal and milk into her own bowl. Everything is where she can reach it.
  • At snack, your sun can grab a baggie of trail mix and pour himself a cup of juice.

You can see how children can feel more empowered this way.
